In November 2023, students gathered to decide our 2025 competition target and chose School Safety from our Society domain.
As a result, our inaugural competition is focused on developing an affordable and automated solution for rapid detection and notification of school shooting events for K-12 schools and colleges. This competition represents a unique opportunity for students to create a solution for a problem directly facing their fellow students.
Students advancing through our competition will receive support from our network of partners, including schools, government entities, and non-profits from across the country.
This solution needs to be able to be implemented in schools with a wide variety of funding.
Your proposal should limit initial hardware costs to $10,000 or less, with monthly subscription fees not exceeding $99. This ensures the system is accessible to a wide range of schools.
Your system should detect and alert within 10 seconds of a firearm being brandished.
Design a system that distinguishes between different staff roles, such as teachers, security personnel, and administrators.
To avoid straining existing infrastructure, limit cloud connection bandwidth to 1 MB/s or less.
In addition to xFoundry's Resource Matrix, we've curated a set of specialized tools and partnerships to support participants in the School Safety Xperience Competition:
